Instead of the phone ringing in immediately, an automated attendant gives the caller options, such as to leave a voicemail, listen to a pre-recorded message, or be transferred to a specific person.

Ex:
"You have reached the Jones' house. To listen to this week's soccer schedule, press 1. To talk to Bobby, press 2. To leave a message, press 3."
